WILLIAM SHATNER´S FAVORITE EPISODE

Name: The Devil In The Dark

Aired in: 1967

Series: TOS

Director: Joseph Pevney

Starring: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelly and introducing HORTA

In his book, Star Trek Memories, William Shatner dedicated a whole chapter to his favprite-episode, The Devil In The Dark. During the filming of this episode, William recieved the news about his father´s death. I´m not going to write so much about that, since this is a review of the episoede; I can simply recomend You to buy the book.

It´s an interesting read if you´re a trekker/trekkie.

The episode begins on the mining-planet Janus 6. Something is moving in the deep tunnels- something that seems enjoy burning the miners to death. The Enterprise is called in to solve the situation, and Kirk, Spock and Dr. McCoy beams down to the planet. Kirk is soon put face-to-face with the creature, and gets to learn it´s true motives...

This is a deep and tragic episode. The monster (called a Horta), only killed the miners (ans lots ef red-shirts) to protect it´s eggs. The Horta turned out to be a very intelligent creature, with a mind not so different from ours. It only wantet to protect

it´s children, caus that´s what every mother wants to.

This is a very action-filled episode. The technique that was used in the scenes where the Horta kills someone, reminds me of the one that was used in the film Jaws by Stephen Spielberg. You see the whole murder-sequens from the monster´s perspective, causing the excitement and the horror to rise.

This is a picture from the very powerful and classic scene where Spock connects his mind to the Horta´s mind, so that he can read it´s mind and find out what it wants. Spock was in pain- which is quite un-usual.

THE STAR TREK- EPISODE EVERY HUMAN BEEING KNOWS ABOUT... UNLESS THEY´RE NOT UN-NORMAL

Name: Arena

Year: 1967

Series: TOS

Director: Joseph Pevney

Starring: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelly and GORN as Himself

Have you ever seen the video "Worst Fight Scene Ever" on YouTube? Well, that clip was from this episode... Arena is perhaps the episode that most non-trekkies conect with Star Trek. It´s probably because of all the parodies based upon the flick, by for example Family Guy. All theese parodies and jokes concerning the legendary fight between Kirk and the Gorn-creature, may make people think this is a bad episode with laughable effects. This is not a true statement.

The plot of this episode is pretty simple: the crew of the Enterprise finds a human outpost on the planet Nimbus 3 to be destroyed by unknown invaders. When back on the ship, the enemy ship is scouted, and Kirk orders to open fire against it. After shooting at the ship, a group of powerful, invicable aliens stops the fight, making both the Enterprise and the enemy ship impossible to control. The aliens seems to dislike Kirk and the enemy´s way of solving the situation, so they decide to put the two fighting captains down on a planet, where they´re going to meet in a man-to-man fight to the death... the captain who wins, will be allowed to fly away in his ship.

So this is how Kirk meets Gorn. And, well, Kirk wins the fight- but not by killing the Gorn, but by realising the meaning of what turns out to be some kind of test...

This is a true classic, as understood- but it´s also TV history, just like any other Trek episode... The way this episode explains the human nature is very powerful. You´ll ofcourse find out more if you see it...

THE BEST EPISODE OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES,

Name: The City on the Edge of Forever

Year: 1967

Director: Joseph Pevney

Starring: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly and Joan Collins

Why does everyone love this episode so much? Perhaps it´s beaucous of the touching love story, or maybe the fact that it was one of the first time-travel episodes in the series- making it special in many ways.

The episode is about Dr. McCoy getting an over-dose of some healing-medecine of some kind. It makes him go crazy, and he beams himself down to a nearby planet. When following him, the other crew-members discovers a big portal, leading to different events in Earth´s history. A mysterious voice tells the crew he is "the guardian of Forever". The voice tells them that if they enter the portal, they will end up in the time it shows.    After we´ve been given this information, Crazy McCoy appears from behind a rock, and enters the portal. Somewhere back in time, McCoy changes the way of history, making Starfleet and the Enterprise never happen! To stop him from doing this in the past, Kirk and Spock travells back in time to the early 1930s- just a few days before McCoy arrived and messed everything up. While there, awaiting McCoys arrival, Kirk falls in love with Edith Keller- a woman who has to die in order to prevent Hitler from winning World War II...

I recommend everyone to see this little pearl. It´s a great episode- truly the one with the best story. All the actors are at their best, and the message is beautiful. See it, it doesn´t matter if you´re a Trekker or not!
